I enjoyed this one. Dialogue is a little sketchy but the plot was decent and had entertaining aspects.

Subject: average overall, but distinguished by on-location shooting in Italy
After spending four years in a US military prison for selling black market goods while stationed in Italy during World War II, former US soldier Frank Keeler returns to Italy to discreetly recover about $6000 worth of illicit profits he had buried prior to his arrest. This should be a quick and easy job, except that various people keep interposing themselves between him and the loot.

Three Steps North is a mix of black comedy (with a some ironical situations and plot twists), murder mystery and escapist fare.
It was shot on location in Italy and the cinematography occasionally offers interesting sights.
The screenplay is average and gives us little background information on the characters, but it does have a couple of good twists. The plot moves at an almost languid pace and some scenes (especially those involving the talkative cemetery caretaker) tend to drag on. However, this reflects the fact that this is a film about a character who's prevented from doing the one thing he wants to do, not an action film showing characters doing lots of things.
The general atmosphere is unremarkable, except for the Italian flavor.
Dialog is perfunctory.
Acting is good.
Print quality is OK.

This film isn't good enough to warrant multiple viewings, but I found it enjoyable as a one-off curiosity.

On a site note, The Green Glove is another film based on a similar premise (an American WWII veteran returning to his former deployment location to fetch something valuable), but better executed.
